Flying Fearless: Celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of New Jersey Airshows, 1910-2010
|
In 1910, when airplanes were a novelty and most Americans had never seen man fly, a series of "aero meets" were sponsored across the United States to showcase the great fliers of the day. Atlantic City and Asbury Park, New Jersey were two stages for these meets in the summer of 1910. In celebration of the centennial anniversary of our airshows, the Asbury Park Public Library and the Atlantic City Free Public Library invite you to explore our cities’ historical airshows through the virtual exhibit online, and through exhibitions at the Atlantic City International Airport ArtPort, the Atlantic City Historical Museum and at the Township of Ocean Historical Museum. From 1910 to the present, airshows are still flying high in New Jersey, with the Atlantic City Air Show on August 25, 2010. Join us in the summer of 2010 as we celebrate 100 years of New Jersey airshows!

| At the Atlantic City Aero Meet, Glenn Curtiss made the first flight above the Atlantic Ocean and broke a world record for speed, and Walter Brookins broke the world record for flight altitude. Curtiss also demonstrated the use of airplanes in wartime. Substituting oranges for bombs and yachts for warships, he waged “war” against Atlantic City, and proved that one is able to hit a static target from a moving aircraft. |
Historic moments at the Asbury Park airshow included Ralph Johnstone and Arch Hoxsey performing the first public nighttime flights, both Walter Brookins and Johnstone crashlanding into spectators, and the unveiling of a new Wright Brothers aeroplane model. |
The exhibits are sponsored by the Asbury Park Public Library and the Atlantic City Free Public Library with assistance from the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority, the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center, the Atlantic City Historical Museum and the Township of Ocean Historical Museum. The Atlantic City Free Public Library is an official sponsor of the 2010 Atlantic City Air Show "Thunder Over the Boardwalk".
