More than 100,000 spectators crowded the Atlantic City beach and Boardwalk for the very first East Coast airshow in July 1910. "Aero Meet" officials had to stop the events several times to clear the landing strip on the beach of spectators. The Asbury Park Aviation Meet was actually held in a field in Interlaken, New Jersey. The show was sponsored by Asbury Park. Celebrities of the day, such as Thomas Edison and New Jersey Governor John Franklin Fort attended the events. The Asbury Park airshow also included dirigibles, balloons, and parachute jumps. (From the local history collection of Asbury Park Public Library.) Unfortunately, the Asbury Park show was marred by tragedy - Walter Brookins crashed on the first day of the meet and Ralph Johnstone crashed on day nine, and a parachutist lost his life when his chute did not open. I am a retired police officer from Ocean County and presently work
security at the FAA Tech Center.  I read the story 7/13/10 of the time
capsule unveiling and noticed the photo of John Harrold Jr. the city's
first mailman.  Just wondering, I have a very old paperback, well sort of
parchment book of a John Harrold, originally from Penna. who was captured
during the Civil War and escaped and returned, but went to Atlantic City.
I have attempted to do some research on the book itself with minor luck.
Is there any connection between the two Harrolds ?  The time period
coincides a little.  perhaps the mailman depicted was the son of the Civil
War veteran Harrold.
